I was in my hotel room in Jackson, MS trying to find the SEC final game on the TV. All I got was the MLS Cup final between LA Galaxy and the Houston Dynamo- Beckham’s MLS swansong. Expectedly, it was low on speed and skill. Not as low as the Beijing Guoan game I attended last year, but low none the less. Two moments in the game stood out for me and encapsulated why I like David Beckham or DB7 or Becks or GoldenBalls or whatever his marketing team is calling him these days.
He passes the ball to Landon Donovan near the corner flag to wind the clock down.92nd minute LA win a penalty kick. Game’s over. One more opportunity for Becks to write the headlines. Robbie Keane takes it and scores.
Put Cristiano Ronaldo in those two situations. We all know what he would do. Or Tevez. Or Nani. I’m not saying that Beckham was better than any of these players. Ability-wise, he isn’t. I’m not saying that Fergie was wrong to sell him. Maybe he was, maybe he wasn’t.
The point of writing this blog is this- behind Brand Beckham is a footballer of great footballing intelligence, humility, team ethic and love for the game. A lot of players playing today follow the trail blazed by Brand Beckham, they’d do well to learn from Beckham the footballer and Beckham the person as well.
Take a bow, David Beckham. Ignore the haters.
